Cardiovascular and oncological diseases remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Montenegro and the wider cross-border region. According to GLOBOCAN 2020 data, Montenegro recorded 3,184 new cancer cases and 1,765 cancer-related deaths. With the expected increase in cancer incidence, an ageing population, and existing healthcare challenges, improving early detection, diagnostics, and access to specialised treatment is becoming increasingly important.
The Clinical Centre of Montenegro (CCM), as the country's leading tertiary healthcare institution, plays a crucial role in providing specialised oncology services. Through this project, CCM aims to strengthen its diagnostic and treatment capacities, introduce advanced medical technologies, and improve the quality and accessibility of cancer care.
A particular focus is placed on early lung cancer detection and the improvement of radiotherapy treatment, including the application of advanced techniques such as stereotactic radiotherapy and brachytherapy. These approaches are expected to contribute to more precise and effective treatment, improved patient outcomes, and better survival rates.
Brachytherapy represents an important component of the planned improvements at CCM, offering opportunities to enhance treatment efficiency and quality for patients with various malignancies, particularly cervical, prostate, oesophageal, and lung cancers.
The project will also support the development of innovative digital solutions, improved cancer prevention and screening programmes, and the modernisation of healthcare infrastructure through new equipment and professional training.
Through cooperation with healthcare institutions in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Clinical Centre of Montenegro will contribute to strengthening cross-border collaboration, exchanging medical expertise, and promoting common standards in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Ultimately, the project aims to improve access to modern oncology services, enhance treatment outcomes, and strengthen the long-term capacities of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro, benefiting patients in Montenegro and the wider cross-border region.
