Vespa Secondary Spectrometer Assembly

According to this notice the expected publication date of the contract documents (note that this could change) is 2026-10-08 ESS will shortly publish a tender for the design, manufacture, testing and installation at ESS of several components that form part of the Vespa Secondary Spectrometer. The scope of supply will include two aluminium helium vessels, B4C shielding pieces, a motion system and support systems. Technical Quality As a minimum requirement, the Supplier shall provide a technical report describing its response to the technical requirements defined in the Statement of Work (SoW). The report shall include conceptual designs for the different Units and shall identify and justify any proposed deviations or modifications to the suggested geometry. The Supplier shall also state the total estimated mass of B4C required for Unit 3, separately identifying quantities for both solid and powder forms. In addition, the Supplier shall describe its proposed approach to the following items. Each item will be evaluated independently, with a maximum score of 10 points allocated to each response: • Alignment and positioning features for the analyser holders, including methods for alignment within the UFOs (helium vessels), and positioning features for aligning the UFOs relative to the theoretical sample position. • The proposed motion system, including positioning methodology and the approach to achieving the specified repeatability requirements. • Compliance with the Gd₂O₃ coating requirements defined in Section 4.7.3, with particular emphasis on the proposed equivalent thickness and details of any fillers or binding agents, where applicable. Responses will be evaluated based on the extent to which the proposed solutions satisfy the operational and scientific requirements defined in the SoW.
