Queen’s University Belfast as a partner in the consortium delivering the EU PEACEPLUS-funded GEMINI Project, requires the supply, delivery, installation supervision and commissioning of a fibre optic distributed temperature sensing (DTS) analyser (interrogator), cables and associated accessories for installation in shallow geothermal boreholes at three demonstrator sites: one in the Republic of Ireland and two in Northern Ireland.
The equipment will be used to monitor the heat resource within the subsurface, supporting research that will further the uptake of geothermal energy across the island of Ireland.
The project is funded until September 2028. Drilling at Demonstrator Site 1 is expected to commence from Q4 2026 and continue into FY2027. Drilling timelines at each site depend on the procurement timescales of each respective site owner and are therefore subject to change.
The demonstrator sites are in urban settings. Demonstrator Site 1 is located in County Sligo; Demonstrator Sites 2 and 3 are located in Greater Belfast. Works will be carried out outdoors and will be exposed to seasonal and inclement weather conditions.
